UC DAVIS: VICE CHANCELLOR-ADMINISTRATION

March 30, 1999

DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND CAMPUS/UCDHS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS:

RE: 13th Annual Disability Awareness Week, April 19-23

The campus will be presenting the 13th annual Disability Awareness Week, April
19 through 23. The program will address the successful integration of
individuals with disabilities into the workplace. Events offer participants
the opportunity to view abilities, and not the disabilities, by focusing on
the accomplishments of persons with disabilities.

Tuesday, April 20, Keynote Speaker Lou Ferrigno "Incredible Hulk," Main
Theater, Noon to 1:00 PM Far from the days he was green and full of rage as
television's "Incredible Hulk," versatile Lou Ferrigno is continuing to surprise
audiences with his diverse talents, which include acting in film projects,
giving his voice to an animated series, and writing a bodybuilding and fitness
guide. Participants will be inspired as Lou describes how his hearing loss at
a young age fostered his drive to become a champion. At age 21, Lou was the
youngest athlete to ever win the Mr. Universe title, a record that still stands.
Weighing in at a solid 260 pounds, the 6-foot, 5 inch tall personal trainer has
gained national recognition as an actor and as a formidable speaker. Be prepared
for a very special presentation! Refreshments will be provided.

Wednesday, April 21, FDI Speaker, MU De Carli Room, Noon to 1:00 PM
The campus Forum on Disability Issues is pleased to present "Discovering the
Disability Story," a special presentation by Cyndi Jones, former Editor and
Columnist for Mainstream, a national magazine about disability. Ms. Jones,
who has addressed many national conferences on disability rights and affirmative
action, is nationally recognized for her contribution and work with consumer
groups around the country on advocacy and empowerment issues. She is
frequently called upon for her professional views and opinions and was among a
select group of disability media representatives to discuss disability rights
issues with former President Bush on the eve of the passage of the 1990
Americans with Disabilities Act. Come and hear how the media influences
disability and learn about the highlights of Supreme Court issues being heard
today and this year regarding disability.

Thursday, April 22, "The Demo Experience," MU II, Noon to 1:00 PM
Experience the newest technology for students, faculty and staff with learning
disabilities, blind and visual impairments, and hearing impairments. Featured
technology will include the opportunity to experience voice-activated
software. Co-sponsored by the campus Vocational Rehabilitation Program.

Friday, April 23, Disability Resource Center Open House, South Silo, 11:00 to

demonstrations, and gather disability resource information.

Friday, April 23, Wheelchair Challenge, Silo Courtyard, Noon to 1:00 PM
The week's activities will culminate with the traditional Wheelchair Challenge

is your chance to see your colleagues navigate an obstacle course designed to
simulate barriers encountered daily by wheelchair users. You are invited to
participate in the Challenge or to experience another simulation activity.
Also included in Friday's Wheelchair Challenge event is a special presentation
honoring staff and faculty members who have demonstrated an outstanding
commitment to the hiring, training, and retention of people with disabilities.

Supervisors, please urge staff to participate in all Disability Awareness Week
activities. Department/Unit representation at these events is highly
recommended. Release time with supervisory approval is appropriate. All
