AND CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS

RE: Relocation of UC Davis Data Center

The UC Davis Data Center, which houses all campus centralized processing, has
been resident in the Hutchison Hall basement for many years. Several events
over the last couple years have caused the campus and IT leadership to move
the campus Data Center to another location. These events include a flooding
incident in the basement of Hutchison Hall in January 1997, an auditor's
report on the potential for problems in Hutchison Hall from earthquakes,
and a mock fire emergency in an upstairs Hutchison Hall laboratory that led
to a determination that the basement would be flooded when the fire hoses were
turned on.

After extensive investigation of alternatives, the Provost and Executive Vice
Chancellor approved the relocation of the Data Center to the building
previously occupied by Repro Graphics. This building will accommodate the
Data Center with minimal renovations.

The new Data Center will be ready for occupancy by November 13, 1998. We will
move the first systems into the facility on November 14, 1998. These will
include various infrastructure servers with minimal impact on campus clients.
On November 21, we will move the first group of administrative servers,
including the development systems for SIS and DaFIS. The production systems
for SIS and DaFIS will move on November 26, 1998. A small number of
infrastructure and academic systems will move between November 26-28, 1998.
The remaining infrastructure systems, including all email servers, will move
over the Fall Quarter break, between Dec. 19-29, 1998. The detailed list of
move dates for all systems can be found on our web site,
http://ir.ucdavis.edu/dc. Detailed information on move schedules, including
downtimes, will be posted to this site as the schedules are finalized.

We are working closely with the various client support groups to assure the
success of this move and to minimize the impact on campus clients.

Please consult the above web site for updates on the relocation and move
schedules. You may send comments and questions by email to
dc-move@ucdavis.edu.

Sincerely,

Gerald R. Hallee
Acting Associate Vice Chancellor-Information Technology
