UC DAVIS: VICE CHANCELLOR-ADMINISTRATION October 13, 1998 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRPERSONS AND CAMPUS/UCDHS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Domestic Violence Awareness Month The month of October is recognized nationally by public and private employers as a time to educate all persons regarding the problem of domestic violence. The Davis campus joins in this educational effort. We know from research and experience that domestic violence in the home has impact in the workplace in the form of lower productivity, absenteeism, high health care costs, financial costs, violence in the workplace, and legal liability for an employer. It affects not only the victim of domestic violence, but also her/his co-workers, clients and supervisor. At UC Davis, we are committed to initiating and sustaining policy, programs and services that address the impact of domestic violence on our staff and faculty. This month, we launch new initiatives intended to assist victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, to address the concerns of supervisors and co-workers, to develop policy and procedures for responding to domestic violence, and to educate the campus community. We ask you to take advantage of the campus resources to educate your staff and to address any concerns that arise. These resources include: * Jennifer Beeman, Police Department * Sergeant Joyce Souza, Police Department * Sally Harvey, Academic and Staff Assistance Program * Employee and Labor Relations Consultants Dennis Shimek Associate Vice Chancellor- Human Resources & Risk Management 8-118
