The attached announcement describes the Internship, the selection criteria and the application process. This Internship will provide the successful candidate with experience, knowledge and skills in the field of human resources, specifically in affirmative action/equal opportunity and diversity. The experience will help them to compete more effectively for future positions. Candidates must be career employees and meet the qualifications as specified in the attached announcement. They must have the approval of their supervisor and department head to participate in the Internship. The Intern will be selected through a competitive process. October 7, 1998 ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNSHIP POSITION IN THE STAFF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION & DIVERSITY (SAAD) and HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICES on CAMPUS SIX MONTHS @ 100% TIME January 1999 - July 1999* (*The beginning date is flexible depending on the needs of the successful candidate and his/her home department.) OBJECTIVE OF THE INTERNSHIP This Administrative Internship position will provide an opportunity for a campus staff employee to gain experience in the area of human resources, specifically affirmative action/equal employment opportunity and diversity. The Intern will receive mentoring and training and be a contributing member of the SAAD team. INTERNSHIP ASSIGNMENTS The successful candidate will have an opportunity to hone her/his communication skills through workshop presentations and participation in campuswide meetings. She/he will be part of a new coordinated campus outreach/inreach effort and represent the campus at employment-related community activities. While participating in the ongoing campus affirmative action and diversity efforts, consistent with the Regental policies and in compliance with the law, the Intern's assignments will include the following: * Participate in workshop presentations. * Participate on a new outreach coordination taskforce. * Assist in developing a survey instrument and database to identify faculty and staff that wish to participate in campus outreach efforts. * Develop a directory of campus and medical center outreach efforts and contacts. The Intern will report to, and be mentored by, the Director for Diversity, AA/EEO and the Associate Vice Chancellor - Human Resources & Risk Management. DURATION OF INTERNSHIP The successful candidate will serve in the Internship full-time for six months. The home department will be able to use the salary savings as an opportunity to provide career development for another employee or to temporarily replace the Intern with a casual employee. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION * Experience working with a variety of people with diverse interests. * Knowledge of the campus and community issues. * Effective interpersonal skills. * Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. * Experience with affirmative action and diversity issues. * Demonstrated presentation skills. * Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills. * Knowledge of computers (including spreadsheets, databases). ELIGIBILITY AND BASIS FOR SELECTION Applicants must be campus career employees and will be expected to perform at an analyst level. Examples of classifications that provide appropriate experience would be, but are not limited to: "_____" Assistant III, Library Assistant III, Student Affairs Officer I, or an equivalent combination of education and other experiences. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Candidates should discuss their interest in this position with their supervisors and have supervisory support before submitting an application. The successful candidate must have a career position to return to at the end of the Internship. An application packet will require the following: * 1-2 page statement of purpose and how this internship relates to your career goals. * Letter of support from your supervisor or department manager. * UCD application with appropriate computer supplemental form. (Note: Interviewees will be asked to give a 5-minute presentation on a topic of their choice.)
