UC DAVIS: VICE CHANCELLOR-ADMINISTRATION September 30, 1998 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRPERSONS Re: International Flight Travel Reimbursements For Faculty Recruitments Effective immediately, I am implementing an exception to the travel policy to permit deans to approve reimbursement for the international portion of airfare when related to faculty recruitments. University policy (PPM 300-10, Section V, Paragraph B.2) currently restricts airfare reimbursements on faculty recruitments to that travel that occurs within the United States. Increasingly, international scholars are recruited for faculty positions. The prohibition against reimbursing for the full airfare, i.e., all legs of the flight, in the past has disadvantaged UCD in its pursuit of excellent faculty prospects. Thus, to remain competitive in faculty recruitment, the campus will no longer restrict those reimbursements to only the US portion of the flight. It is important to remember, however, that the source of funding continues to play a role in international travel. It is mandatory that US flag air carrier services be used whenever federal contracts or grants finance that travel, to the extent such service is available. (Please reference PPM 300-10, Section X, Paragraph B, for details.) Please remember that this exception applies only to faculty recruitments. Policy still requires approval of the dean before any commitment for reimbursement of travel expense is made to the prospective appointee. Any questions regarding this exception to policy should be referred to me at 752-2081 or to Tony Flores at 757-8501. Janet C. Hamilton Vice Chancellor-Administration 98-098
