UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE PROVOST

June 24, 1998

DEANS, DIRECTORS AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS:

RE: Academic Salaries 1998-99

The University's proposed 1998-99 budget includes a 2 percent general salary
increase and a 2.5 percent parity salary increase for ladder-rank faculty, with
a proposed effective date of October 1, 1998. The proposed 2.5 percent parity
increase for eligible faculty titles, if funded by the final State Budget, is
part of the Salary Scale Parity Adjustment Plan, issued October 24, 1995, to
bring the ladder-rank faculty salaries to parity with faculty salaries at our
Comparison 8 institutions.

The Salary Scale Parity Adjustment Plan issued on October 24, 1995 projected
the need for a 3 percent annual parity increase for the years 1996-97, 1997-98,
and 1998-99. The most recent CPEC Report on Faculty Salaries projects a 4.6
percent lag in salary for UC's faculty in 1998-99. The combined 2 percent
general and 2.5 percent parity increase, if funded by the State, are projected
to accomplish the return to parity in 1998-99.

Comments concerning this should be forwarded to Linda Bullard by June 30, 1998.

Sincerely,

Harvey Himelfarb
Vice Provost--Academic Planning and Personnel
