RE: Call for Applications for an Administrative Internship

I am pleased to announce an Administrative Internship under the sponsorship
of the Staff Affirmative Action and Diversity Office. The attached
announcement describes the internship, the selection criteria and the
application process.

This internship is designed to provide the successful candidate with an
opportunity to gain experience, knowledge and skills in the field of human
resources, specifically in affirmative action/equal opportunity and
diversity. The experience will help the Intern to compete more effectively
for future positions. 

Candidates must be career employees and meet the qualifications as
specified in the attached announcement. They must have the approval of
their supervisor and department head to participate in the Internship. The
Intern will be selected through a competitive process.

ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNSHIP POSITION IN THE STAFF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION &
DIVERSITY (SAAD) and HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICES 100% FTE, August* 1998 - JULY
1999 

OBJECTIVE OF THE INTERNSHIP

The objective of this Administrative Internship position is to provide an
opportunity for a staff employee to gain experience in the field of human
resources, specifically in affirmative action/equal employment opportunity
and diversity awareness and in the areas of community outreach and campus
inreach. The Intern will receive mentoring and training to be a
contributing member of the SAAD team.

Through this Internship the successful candidate will have an opportunity
to gain experience in fact finding and informal and outside complaints, and
hone their communication skills by presenting workshops regarding
discrimination and harassment in the workplace. The Intern will also have
an opportunity to be part of a new coordinated campus outreach and inreach
effort.

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

The successful candidate will be expected to serve in the Internship
full-time for approximately one year. The Intern will be brought in at the
Personnel Analyst classification level. The home department will be able to
use the salary savings as an opportunity to provide career development for
another employee or to temporarily replace the Intern with a casual employee. 

INTERNSHIP ASSIGNMENTS

The Intern will report to, and be mentored by, the Director for Campus
Diversity, AA/EEO and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources &
Risk Management. While participating in the ongoing campus affirmative
action and diversity efforts, consistent with the Regental policies and in
compliance with the law, the Intern's assignments will include the following:


* Participate in workshop presentations. 
* Assist with complaints filed informally and with state and federal
agencies. 
* Participate on a new outreach coordination task force. 
* Assist in developing a survey instrument and database to identify faculty
and staff that wish to participate in campus outreach efforts. 
* Develop a directory of campus and Medical Center outreach efforts and
contacts.
*The beginning date is flexible depending on the needs of the successful
candidate and his/her home department.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION 

* Expressed interest in human resources, affirmative action and diversity. 
* Effective interpersonal skills. 
* Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. 
* Experience working with a wide variety of people with diverse interests. 
* Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills. 
* Experience making presentations. 
* Knowledge of the campus and community issues. 
* Knowledge of computers (i.e., word processing, databases, spreadsheets).

ELIGIBILITY AND BASIS FOR SELECTION

Applicants must be UCD career employees and will be expected to perform at
an analyst level. Examples of classifications that provide appropriate
experience would be, but are not limited to: a (___) Assistant III, MSO I,
Library Assistant III, or Student Affairs Officer I, or an equivalent
combination of education and other experiences.

Interested candidates should discuss their interest in this position with
their supervisor and have their support before submitting an application. 

An application packet will require the following:

* A statement of purpose and career goals, 
* A letter of support from their supervisor or department manager,
* A UCD application with appropriate computer supplemental form, and 
* A writing sample.

mailed to them.

(Please note: Candidates selected for interviews will be expected to give a
5-minute presentation.)
