UC DAVIS: DIVISION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

May 22, 1998

DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS
AND CAMPUS/UCDMC ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS:

SUBJECT: Odyssey '98, May 26-28

I am pleased to invite all staff, faculty, and students to attend Odyssey '98,
a three-day exploration of information technologies at UC Davis. Odyssey '98
provides a unique opportunity to learn more about technology and to interact
with campus members who have incorporated technology into their work.

Beginning Tuesday, May 26 and concluding Thursday, May 28, campus members will
give a series of talks and panel presentations in the M.U. East Conference
Room. The presentations will address such important and timely topics as
Internet plagiarism, the California Digital Library, distance education, mass
email distribution, departmental technology plans, the future of data
administration at UC Davis, remote access to the campus network, and
fractal-inspired clothing.

Odyssey '98 culminates Thursday, May 28, in Freeborn Hall with an all-day
Technology Showcase from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Over 40 demonstrations by the
campus community will illustrate how information technologies are being incorporated
into teaching, research, and administrative programs. Short hands-on tutorials
will also be offered throughout the day on both basic topics and more complex
issues.

The Technology Showcase will also feature a free raffle and door prizes.

Odyssey '98 is sponsored by the Academic Federation, ASUCD, the General
Library, the Graduate Student Association, the Joint Campus Committee on
Information Technology, the Teaching Resources Center, and the Division of
Information Technology.

Release time with supervisory approval is appropriate and encouraged. Please
encourage students to attend by announcing the schedule of events in your
classes.

Inquiries regarding Odyssey '98 can be directed to odyssey@ucdavis.edu.
Further information, including a complete schedule of events and a floor plan for the
technology showcase, is available on the Web athttp://odyssey.ucdavis.edu.
