RE: Change to the Manual Publication Process

Effective May 1, 1998, the process for publishing manual sections has changed.
This process will apply to the UC Davis Policy and Procedure Manual, the
Academic Personnel Manual, the Personnel Policies for Staff Members Manual,
and the Sponsored Research Manual.

In the past, new and revised manual sections approved by Provost and Executive
Vice Chancellor Robert Grey have been held until there are enough to publish,
which for cost-effectiveness is usually at least five or six sections. The
World Wide Web versions of the manual sections have also been held for
electronic posting to coincide with the distribution of the paper copies.

Our objective is to enhance our campuswide communication through more timely
release of policy and procedure changes without affecting the
cost-effectiveness of the present publication process. Therefore, each manual
section will now be posted on the Web as soon as it is approved by Provost and
Executive Vice Chancellor Grey, with an effective date that is the same as the
approval date. A brief note will be posted on the manual home page
(http://www.mrak.ucdavis.edu/web-mans/manuals.htm) to alert UC Davis users to new 
and revised sections.  The paper copies will still be held for distribution until 
the transmittal packet is large enough for cost-effective printing, but will carry 
the approval date, as posted on the Web, rather than the actual publication date.
