UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF ADMINISTRATION May 1, 1998 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRPERSONS, AND CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS: RE: 1998 Summer Youth Program This summer the University of California, Davis, will once again participate in the Summer Youth Employment and Training Program (SYETP) operated by the Yolo County Community Partnership Agency (CPA) and the Private Industry Council. Current plans call for 25 high school students that have been referred by local high schools, migrant camps and other organizations to be placed on campus, with other students placed at the UC Davis Medical Center. This program provides a variety of opportunities for learning work maturity, basic skills, and work experience. This year, there is a shorter response time for departments to request students. With this directive, I am asking all departments to consider participating in this federally funded program designed to provide meaningful work experience for youth between the ages of 14 and 21. Their appointments will consist of 20 to 40 hours per week, with participants’ salaries paid by the SYETP. The program will begin in June 1998, and continue for approximately 8 weeks. SYETP personnel will attempt to match departments to students’ educational backgrounds and interests. There is no charge to the department. Those departments who choose to participate must adhere to SYETP’s requirements. Again, the SYETP program will be looking for sites for some non-English speaking students. The Summer Youth Employment and Training Program prohibits placement of any student in a department that would have the effect of displacing current employees or filling a position created by termination, layoff, or reduction in the workforce. This year CPA will be conducting a work site supervisor orientation to answer any questions you may have regarding the program time lines, work site supervisor responsibilities, time card procedures and participant evaluations. It is essential that all work site supervisors attend a meeting scheduled for June 12, 1998, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in 5 Lower Freeborn. Departments wishing to participate in this year’s program should complete and return the attached form to Art Williams, Employment/Outreach, Administration Annex, by May 22, 1998.
