RE:  Workplace Violence Prevention Brochure - "Maintaining a Safe Workplace"

We would like to call your attention to the importance of the enclosed brochure, 
"Maintaining a Safe Workplace."  The brochure provides information about how to 
respond to disturbing behavior in the workplace, ranging from disruptive incidents 
to conflicts among co-workers, to physical violence.  The brochure also outlines 
steps that may be taken to prevent such occurrences.  There have been a growing 
number of reported disruptions and threats across the country.  At UC Davis these 
types of incidents have involved faculty, staff, and students.  The kinds of 
measures described here can significantly lessen their number and their impact.

Those who have questions regarding policy and procedure in general may contact 
Deborah Luthi, Director of Human Resources & Risk Management, at 752-6537.  People 
needing more specific assistance are referred to the contacts listed on page 2 of 
the brochure as well as the website http://hr.ucdavis.edu/violence/.

This is also to alert you that your department Safety Coordinator will be learning 
more about this issue at their regular meetings on 5/4/98 and 5/11/98.  You may also 
want to attend or send an additional representative from your department.  A copy of 
this brochure is also being distributed to campus supervisors.
