UC DAVIS: MAIL DIVISION December 5, 1997 DEANS, DIRECTORS, AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRPERSONS AND CAMPUS / UCDMC ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: CANADIAN POSTAL STRIKE The Canadian Government has introduced legislation to end the strike by their Postal Employees. As a result, the mail embargo to Canada has been lifted. Because this is not a negotiated agreement, there could be work-slowdowns and other disruptions. Effective immediately the US Postal Service is resuming normal mail service to Canada. All classes of mail will be accepted. The following instructions relate to Canada-bound mail that was prepared or sent during the Canadian postal strike. If mail was returned to sender because of the strike, it may be remailed without new postage. If the mail bears the endorsement "Service Temporarily Suspended" the endorsement should be crossed out before it enters the mail stream. Mailers who do not wish to re-mail their items may receive a 100% postage refund by filing a P S Form 3533, available from the Davis Post Office. Metered mail returned to sender does not have to be re-dated. It may be accepted with an old date. Canada Post is staffing up and adding extra ground and air freight capacity to move the backlog of mail through the system. Mailers may wish to send time-sensitive or urgent documents by International Express Mail or Global Priority Mail until the backlog is cleared. If you have any questions, please contact Jim Downing at 752-8094 or Terry Chase at 752-7680. At the Medical Center you may contact Barbara Henman at 734-7225. Al Pencin Manager 97-163
