RE: Recruitment for Vice Provost--Academic Personnel and Vice
Provost--University Outreach and International Programs
I write to announce the recruitments for two key academic leadership
positions on the Davis campus and seek your help in identifying diverse
pools of candidates with strong records of accomplishment for each of them.
Vice Provost--Academic Personnel: This position reports to the Provost
and has major responsibility for the administration of the academic
personnel process and development of policies for faculty and non-Senate
academic employees. Knowledge of UC academic personnel policy and
administrative experience are important requirements for the position, and
the recruitment process will be internal to the University of California.
Vice Provost--University Outreach and International Programs: This new
position reports jointly to the Chancellor and Provost and will provide
leadership in the coordination of all aspects of our campus's expanding
outreach and international initiatives. This position is being recruited
nationally.
Copies of the position announcements are appended for your reference. Each
lists qualifications specific to the position. In both cases, however, we
seek candidates who share our campus commitment to the achievement of
diversity among our faculty, staff, and students. Screening of candidates
for the positions will begin January 23, 1998; each will remain open until

VICE PROVOST--ACADEMIC PERSONNEL
University of California, Davis
The University of California, Davis invites applications and nominations
for the position of Vice Provost--Academic Personnel.
The Vice Provost--Academic Personnel reports to the Provost and is
responsible for the development and administration of academic personnel
policy for faculty and non-Senate academic employees; management of
academic personnel process with approval authority for a range of actions
and titles; administration of Faculty Code of Conduct and academic
grievance procedures; affirmative action for all academic employee groups;
liaison with Committees on Academic Personnel, Privilege and Tenure,
Academic Freedom, Faculty Welfare, Affirmative Action, and the campus
Academic Federation, a representative group for non-Senate academic
employees, and development and administration of programs for faculty
development and management training for academic leaders and supervisors.
The Vice Provost--Academic Personnel also acts for the Provost in providing
day-to-day oversight of the Office of Campus Diversity and participates in
the development of campuswide policy through membership on the Council of
Vice Chancellors and the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors.
We seek candidates with a distinguished record of research, teaching, and
service within the University of California in a tenured professorial
position; knowledge of University of California academic personnel
processes; and the ability to work effectively in a liaison capacity with
groups representing faculty and non-Senate employees. The University of
California, Davis, has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement

VICE PROVOST--UNIVERSITY OUTREACH AND INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS

The University of California, Davis invites applications and nominations
for the position of Vice Provost--University Outreach and International
Programs. This new position reports jointly to the Chancellor and Provost.
The Vice Provost--University Outreach and International Programs will be
expected to provide leadership in the coordination of all aspects of the
campus's expanding outreach and international initiatives. Specifically,
the Vice Provost will provide leadership and coordination in the
development, encouragement, and implementation of outreach activities and
programs, including campus initiatives involving government, business, and
communities in addressing societal needs. University Extension and Summer
Sessions will report directly to the Vice Provost. The Vice Provost will
also provide leadership in the coordination of all campus international
initiatives, including the establishment and operation of a campus-wide
Office of International Programs serving as a central resource center. The
Vice Provost will work closely with the deans of the schools, colleges, and
divisions, the Dean--Graduate Studies, the Vice Provost--Undergraduate
Studies, and the Vice Chancellor--Research in facilitating and stimulating
the development of curricular offerings, educational programs, and research
initiatives that advance campus objectives in outreach and globalization.
We seek candidates who will embrace our commitment to being a fully engaged
university, both locally and globally. Candidates should have a record of
research, teaching, and service appropriate for an appointment as Professor
within an academic department on campus, demonstrated skills in program
development and budgeting, experience in interacting with government,
not-for-profit, and business organizations in the United States and abroad;
and a deep appreciation of and commitment to the mission of a land-grant
university in the 21st century. The University of California, Davis, has a
