UC DAVIS OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR October 24, 1997 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRPERSONS, AND CAMPUS/UCDMC ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Proposed Semester Conversion Chancellor Vanderhoef announced in his Fall Convocation address his intentions to ask the campus community to consider changing the academic calendar to the early semester system. I have been charged by the Chancellor with (1) consulting with the faculty and other constituencies of the campus community; (2) reviewing the issues associated with converting to semesters; and (3) reporting to him by the end of the Fall Quarter, offering my recommendations on whether to convert our academic calendar and, if so, on the timing of any such conversion. To initiate that consultation, I have prepared an extensive statement describing issues that need to be considered in our review of this proposed change. This document is available to all faculty and staff members at the following website: http://www.mrak.ucdavis.edu/semester.htm At the conclusion of the consultation process, I will reevaluate the arguments for change in light of the comments and information received, consider carefully the information about resources that would be required for conversion and, finally, assess the level of support for change, especially among the faculty. These considerations will form the basis of my recommendations to the Chancellor. Please ensure that all faculty, staff, and students are aware of this proposal. Comments and advice are invited from all members of the campus community and should be sent by e-mail to: semester@ucdavis.edu. Sincerely, Robert D. Grey Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor 97-139
