RE: Recruitment for Dean--School of Law, Dean--Humanities, Arts, and
Cultural Studies, and Dean--Social Sciences

I write to announce the recruitments for three deans-Law; Humanities, Arts,
and Cultural Studies; and Social Sciences.  In each case, the Dean is the
chief academic officer of the School or Division, with responsibility for
academic leadership and management of its resources.   The Deans participate
in campuswide policy development through membership on the Council of Dean
and Vice Chancellors.

As always, we intend to identify  diverse pools of candidates with strong
records of accomplishment.  Please help us identify persons with the
ability, motivation, and background to meet the challenges of these
positions by sharing this announcement with faculty and staff in your
department and by nominating qualified persons.  Applications and

DEAN, SCHOOL OF LAW

The University of California, Davis, invites applications and nominations
for the position of Dean of the School of Law.  Established in 1965, the
School of Law offers a three-year professional curriculum leading to the
degree of Juris Doctor.  Enrollment is limited to 500 students.  There are
currently 30 full-time faculty.

The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School.
Specifically, the Dean is responsible for academic leadership of the School,
management of its resources, relationships with the alumni, the profession,
community, and government, and campuswide policy development through
membership on the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors.

We seek candidates with a deep commitment to academic excellence who can
lead the School in its continuing development.  Qualifications include a
distinguished record of  teaching, research, and professional service
appropriate for appointment to professorial rank in the School; commitment
to legal education of the highest quality; a record of effective advocacy of
diversity; and creative leadership ability and experience.

The Davis campus is an expanding research university currently with 1,600
faculty and approximately 19,200 undergraduate students and 5,200 graduate
and professional students.  The campus has three colleges (Letters and
Science, Engineering, and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences) and four
professional schools (Law, Management, Medicine, and Veterinary Medicine),
and a major medical center in Sacramento.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.  The
starting date will be
July 1, 1998, or as negotiated.

DEAN, DIVISION OF HUMANITIES, ARTS,
AND CULTURAL STUDIES

The University of California, Davis, invites applications and nominations
for the position of Dean of the Division of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural
Studies.  The Division is one of three within the College of Letters and
Science and has 150 full-time faculty, 1,650 undergraduate students in 21
majors, and a graduate student enrollment of approximately 230.  The
Division is composed of 22 departments and programs as follows: English,
fine arts (Art Studio, Art History, Dramatic Art and Dance, Music), ethnic
and cultural studies (Native American Studies, African American and African
Studies, Chicana/Chicano Studies, Asian American Studies, American Studies,
Women's Studies), languages and literatures (German and Russian, Spanish and
Classics, East Asian Studies, French and Italian, Comparative Literature),
and programs in Humanities, Critical Theory, Religious Studies, Medieval
Studies, Nature and Culture. The Division also houses the Humanities
Institute.

The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the Division,

management of its resources including faculty and staff, physical
facilities, and budget. The Dean participates in campuswide policy
development through membership on the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors.
Together with the Deans of the two other divisions within the College of
Letters and Science  -- the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences
and the Division of Social Sciences,  the Dean shares responsibility for the
development activities of the College as well as student advising and
operation of the College's central administrative functions.

 We seek candidates with a deep commitment to academic excellence who can
lead the Division and the College in its continuing development.

service appropriate for appointment as Professor in the Division;
demonstrated ability for creative leadership and management; and the energy

is one of three within the College of Letters and Science and has 192
full-time faculty, 3,750 undergraduate students in 12 majors, and a graduate
student enrollment of approximately 340.  The Division is composed of ten
departments --  Anthropology, Economics, Exercise Science, History, Military
Science, Philosophy, Political Sciences, Psychology, Rhetoric and
Communications, and Sociology; three programs -- History and Philosophy of
Science, International Relations, and Linguistics; and two centers--
Economy, Justice and Society and the Center for Comparative Research.
