RE: The Undergraduate Instructional Improvement Program
I am pleased to issue the annual Call for proposals aimed at improving undergraduate
instruction. The evaluation and funding of UIIP proposals will be coordinated through the
Teaching Resources Center. Please direct questions regarding substance or process to the
TRC.
The Undergraduate Instructional Improvement Grant Program is a main source of funding
on campus for curricular renewal and pedagogical innovation. Each year areas of emphasis
are cited based on identified campus needs. Please read the descriptions of the areas
carefully; some have appeared in previous Calls, but others are new. Although high
priority will be given to proposals directly addressing these areas, faculty are invited to
submit instructional improvement proposals on other topics as well.
This year's areas of emphasis include: (1) the development of courses aimed at integrating
into the curriculum knowledge at the frontiers of a discipline, which is new but is,
nonetheless, judged to be of lasting importance; (2) the restructuring of courses to provide
students with opportunities for active learning; (3) the exploration on instructional
technology to improve the efficiency and quality of teaching and learning; (4) the
integration of material on cultural diversity into the curriculum; (5) the development of
Honors Program courses; and (6) the development of lower- and upper-division seminars
(interdisciplinary seminars, research seminars, and capstone seminars).
I want to let you know as well that I have allocated a small sum of money ($15,000) to be
used as a supplement to UIIP grants for projects dependent on computer equipment. As a
result, instructors will be able to include in a single proposal innovative curricular
developments along with a modest request for associated hardware.
Fall and Spring deadlines for the submission of applications are listed below. Awards in
all categories will be announced within six weeks of each deadline.
Fall deadline November 7, 1997
Spring deadline April 3, 1998
Please note that proposals with the department chair's signature and letter of
support/comment must be received by the Teaching Resources Center no later than 5:00 p.m.
on the stated deadlines in order to be considered for funding. It will not be necessary for
applicants to route proposals to the deans because each dean will provide the TRC with
his/her comments as part of the subsequent review process. To avoid undue delay in a
proposal's review, applicants should call the Teaching Resources Center for advice in the
early stages of preparing their project proposal. Any questions concerning the
Undergraduate Instructional Improvement Program should be directed to Marina
Estabrook, the UIIP Coordinator (2-3249 or meestabrook@ucdavis.edu).
