UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE PROVOST September 12, 1997 DEANS, DIRECTORS AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRS: RE: Implementing Revised Academic Personnel Manual Section 133 Effective July 1, 1997, revised Academic Personnel Manual (APM) Section 133-17 provides that the Chancellor may grant to a faculty member who has substantial responsibility for the care of a newborn child or newly adopted child under the age of five up to one year off the tenure clock for each birth or adoption, provided that all time off the tenure clock totals no more than two years. Requests must be made within two years of the birth or adoption. A provision for retroactivity was included when the initial policy was issued in 1988. As you know, this policy change to extend the probationary period for child care responsibilities was under consideration for several years. Consequently, you may now permit Assistant Professors to make requests to stop the tenure clock for births or adoptions which occurred before July 1, 1997, and which meet the provisions of APM - 133-17. This would be consistent with the actions taken in 1988. APM - 133-17-g(2) provides that a leave of absence taken during the tenure review year does not postpone that review. In concert with and as an extension of that policy, starting with the 1998-99 academic year, the campus will accept no requests to stop the tenure clock after the tenure review year has begun. That will allow any qualifying assistant professor to take advantage of this change in policy during this present academic year. As we are about to begin the 1997-98 tenure review, I strongly recommend that you immediately inform all Assistant Professors in your school, college, division, department or program of these revisions to APM - 133-17. Sincerely, Harvey Himelfarb Vice Provost--Academic Planning and Personnel 97-113
