UC DAVIS: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY June 22, 1997 TO: DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: CAMPUS TOWN HALL MEETING - NETWORK 21 ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY DECISION During the last few months, Information Technology has been installing network equipment to provide connectivity to previously unconnected buildings and users. This has been an interim strategy intended to relieve departmental pressure by staging cutover and to provide an opportunity to reevaluate the Network 21 electronics technology options in light of more current market developments. As part of the reevaluation process, Information Technology invited network architects and administrators from four other UC campuses (UCB, UCSD, UCSC, and UCI) and Stanford University to attend a "think tank" where technology and vendor options were discussed. The conclusion of the "think tank" was that two viable network electronics options now exist rather than one: Fast Ethernet and ATM. The "think tank" members further concluded that because of a loss of vendor support for aging UCDNet equipment and increasing demand on the network, it was imperative to come to a quick conclusion on the appropriate technology and to quickly begin electronics pilot studies and i mplementation. The document summarizing these "think tank" discussions is available on the web: http://net21.ucdavis.edu/Reev.htm. With this background, a more detailed analysis is currently being conducted to evaluate these two technologies for deployment in the final stage of Network 21. This more detailed analysis examines a total of sixteen alternative configurations of these two technologies and evaluates them on a number of performance objectives. The analysis has included as background visits to several of the major technology vendors and discussions with large-scale users of both technologies around the country. This staff report will be posted on the web by July 3 at http://net21.ucdavis.edu/Reev.htm under the Detailed Follow-Up Analysis heading. The Network 21 Budget and Policy Oversight Committee will be selecting a direction on broad electronics strategy by mid-July. Before it does this, however, it would like the benefit of campus input. Consequently, a town hall meeting has been scheduled for Tuedsay, July 8, from 9:00 to 11:00 am, in 1100 Social Sciences. A presentation of the conclusions reached by I.T. staff and the Network 21 Technical Subcommittee based upon the financial and technical analysis currently underway will be made. This, and a collection of the responses and thoughts on electronics direction received from the campus community in attendance at the Town Hall Meeting, will be presented to the Network 21 Budget and Policy Oversight Committee to consider in its decision. Many members of this committee are expected to be in attendence at the Town Hall Meeting. Your attendance and input at the Town Hall Meeting are greatly appreciated. If you cannot attend this meeting, you can e-mail comments to Net21Electron@ucdavis.edu. Sincerely, Jay Lund, Chair Network 21 Technical Subcommittee 97-085
