UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR May 21, 1997 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND CAMPUS/UCDMC ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Campus Community and Diversity Dr. Trevor Chandler, Assistant Vice Chancellor--Campus Diversity, has been on leave from UC Davis, first part time and then full time, since the spring of 1993 to work with the Office of the President as Executive Director of Academic Affirmative Action and Diversity. The Office of the President has recently requested that this move be made permanent, effective July 1, 1997. Although we will miss Dr. Chandler's contributions here at Davis, we wish him well as he continues his important work on behalf of the entire University. The environment in which the campus finds itself is rapidly changing. Regents resolutions SP-1 and SP-2, and now Proposition 209, have disallowed many of the mechanisms we used in an attempt to create a campus that truly reflects the diversity of our State. What has not changed, however, is our commitment to excellence and the role that a diverse faculty, staff, and student body contributes to excellence. We must renew our efforts and work energetically to achieve our goals, within the new reality of our State. To that end, I will be immediately convening a Campus Community and Diversity Council composed of campus colleagues who have major line and management responsibility for affirmative action and diversity programs including faculty, staff, student, and contracting. The membership of this group will also include other individuals with relevant expertise as we take a comprehensive look at our campuswide efforts. As a policy level group, the Council will coordinate and give direction to all affirmative action and diversity activities and programs and evaluate the overall success of units and campuswide programs. Ms. Eleanor Fontes-Fulton, who has served as Interim Director of the Office of Campus Diversity during Assistant Vice Chancellor Chandler's absence, will assume the role of Director for academic year 1997-98 and serve as Executive Secretary of the Campus Diversity and Community Council, which I will chair. In addition, Professor Lenora Timm, who has served part time for the last two years as Special Assistant to the Provost for Campus Diversity, has accepted my invitation to continue serving in this capacity during 1997-98. I will be asking her to assist the Council in preparing recommendations to me regarding the structure and direction that our diversity and affirmative action efforts should have in future years. The Council will be calling on many others as it undertakes its work, and all members of the campus community are welcome to provide input. Comments and suggestions should be sent to Ms. Fontes-Fulton at ejfontesfulton@ucdavis.edu or Professor Timm at latimm@ucdavis.edu. The challenges we face as a leading institution of higher education in a State of such demographic complexity are significant. We are, however, optimistic that through our collective thinking, our commitment, and our perseverance we will find new ways to promote a richly diverse campus community and a stimulating academic environment. Sincerely, Robert D. Grey Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor 97-068
